A Brief History of the Canadarms
1969: NASA enlists Canada to participate in the Space Shuttle Program.
1975: NASA makes a deal for Canada to develop the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, which would later be nicknamed the "Canadarm".
1981: The Canadarm is created.
February 1981: The first Canadarm is signed over to the National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA).
April 1981-August 1993: The 5 Canadarms from the 1st generation are delivered to NASA, specifically in April 1981, January 1983, December 1983, March 1985, and August 1993.
June 1981: The Canadarm is attached to Space Shuttle Columbia.
November 1981: The Canadarm goes to space for the first time, attached to the Space Shuttle Columbia for a test.
June 1982: Canadarm has its first operational mission attached to STS-3, to deploy and move the Plasma Diagnostics Package.
January 1986: A Canadarm is destroyed in the Challenger Disaster.
2001: The Canadarm2, the Canadarm's successor, is created and makes its debut in space.
April 2001: The Canadarm hands a piece of the space station over to Canadarm2 in what the media called the "Canadian handshake".
2011: The Canadarm runs its last mission and is retired at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
The Lunar Gateway, which the Canadarm3 will be on for its lifetime, will begin in-space construction in 2022 and will have fully completed its construction another 4 years after that in 2026.
